Short description
Eötvös Loránd University is the oldest and largest university in Hungary, where all science as well as teaching and research base is represented at the highest level. The program of Environmental Sciences is a complex interdisciplinary research module with environmental awareness. The main goal is that environmental scientists can identify and address environmental impact assessment, environmental certification etc. The graduate researcher should be able to participate in landscape rehabilitation, environmental protection and nature conservation and also should be able to solve environmental problems related to energy resources, engage in environmentally friendly materials and environmentally friendly technologies. It is important to apply "green chemistry" approach and learn environmental technologies. Environmental science in many cases overlaps with all of the classical sciences. This is important because all departments of our faculty have expertise in all areas of natural sciences; notable books and periodicals are available, also major infrastructure and laboratory conditions. This allows keeping up-to-date with new scientific results.

Structure of the program
The Environmental Sciences program offers wide range education in chemistry, biology, physics, Earth and their interdisciplinary sciences. The subjects are presented in lectures (theoretical background of the topics, with the aim to provide a wider view for environmental application), seminars with discussion of the topics and practicing calculation, and laboratory work. Students will familiarize with and develop their skills in most of the environmental sampling and measurements techniques.

Strengths of the program
Our skills and expertise range from the smallest scale (sub atoms) to the largest scale (whole Earth systems). Our science tackles the environment in a holistic manner, integrating a wide range of scientific disciplines. This combines basic and applied research. Our faculty has an especially strong tradition of academic-type training. We work with a wide variety of academic institutions in project and program collaborations. The teachers are involved in national and international professional forums and conferences. The master's degree program in Environmental Sciences – in line with the social and labour market demands – has a major emphasis on the practical elements of training, but the nature of academic training remains strong. Our education strategy, infrastructure and unique combination of cross-cutting scientific expertise enable us to give theoretical and practical knowledge to the students and they can benefit from a sustainable and healthy environment. Our courses are aimed at improving understanding of the environment and the processes that support life on Earth. We are particularly interested in the impacts of human activity on the world around us and in developing ready-to-use approaches for achieving environmental sustainability.

Career opportunities
Students are prepared to directly participate in research and development tasks. Graduates will also be able to work with government and other public-sector bodies, agencies, voluntary societies, academia, industry and commerce – nationally and internationally.

Job examples
Environmental inspector; CEO in Paper Reuse Facility; Waste Management Leader in Automotive Industry, etc.
